When It Comes To Spring, Who Can You Trust?

This whole groundhog thing got me thinking. I mean, I certainly want to know when spring will arrive but on the other hand, I spent a good hour on the “Jimmy the Groundhog” telephone hot-line before I finally got through. Who’s got that kind of time? Besides the national weather service says he’s only right 40% of the time while supporters say he’s right 80% of the time. I don’t want to get in the middle of that debate! I just want to know when spring will arrive. Then it it hit me, “Hey, I live in Wisconsin! I’ve been taking pictures in Wisconsin for years! I can figure this out myself!”
Now I know we have climate maps and a hundred odd years of statistics to tell us when spring will arrive, that’s in addition to the groundhog of course. But these days when talking about climate no one can be trusted. I mean, who’s pocket is the groundhog in? And you certainly can’t trust climatologists and weathermen right? Didn’t the weathermen have to all go underground anyway? Maybe they fudged the numbers. Maybe someone added a minus sign or tweaked a snow day! How would we ever know?
Maybe the exact arrival of spring in Wisconsin is being covered up by greedy, power hungry climatologists who’ve been paid off by the oil companies to convince us that the earth is not warming. Conversely maybe the arrival date of spring is being hidden by tree-hugging, eco-terrorists who want us to believe the earth IS warming with the intent to make us go live in huts, eat wheat grass and sing kumbaya. Chilling isn’t it!? Either way are you willing to take the risk? Are you willing to go out on a limb and trust these guys when it comes to issues as important as arrival of spring in Wisconsin? Of course not! All the more reason to trust me and my pictures I’d say!
So after hours and hours of unpaid, thankless research; after hours of study and long late blurry visioned nights; after comparing dates scribbled on old prints and checking metadata on hundreds of Jpgs, Bmps, Psds, EPSs, Tiffs and RAWs; after burning candles at both ends and sipping coffee from both sides of the cup, I’ve come to a conclusion.. Spring will come to Wisconsin. It will come, in oh, let’s say… March! (or maybe April…)
Hang in there!

Spring comes when the Hepatica and Bloodroot come. Every other indicator is bogus. You know that…
I don’t really trust Spring until mid-April. The calendar may claim Spring at the end of March but early April can be pretty nasty. Somewhere around the middle it starts looking awfully Spring like and Spring is usually in full swing by the end.

March or April for sure. I rember a couple of years ago it snowed on Easter Day. This was NOT a light snow, I have this video. I have a love hate relationship here… The LONGGGG winters & late spring drive batty but the moderate weather in summer & the gracious people make me love it. Only been here going on 5 years.
