Amazing Sunrise!

Baraboo was treated to an unique and awe-inspiring sunrise this morning brought on by extremely cold temperatures (-10 at daybreak) and a thick fog that hung over the still flowing Baraboo River.   This amazing image was only visible within the  Baraboo river valley however, as the low fog dissipated quickly as soon as you drove into higher elevations or left the Baraboo valley.

The sunrise began as 3 pillars of light rose from behind the bluffs and speared into the sky.  Slowly, as the sun began to rise further into the sky, the outer pillars grew thicker and took on a rainbow of colors. As time passed they then  began to bend toward each other to create a halo around the sun as seen in the image at the top of the page.  You can see larger versions of these images on our Flickr

The Spring Green Preserve is a “Must See”

Anyone who has walked through a grassy field out behind a farm, may think they know what a prairie is all about. I certainly used to. But open fields over run by domestic animals and farm equipment for the best part of a century share little in common with an actual prairie. In fact, there is very little “true” prairie left in Wisconsin. Read the rest of this entry »

Pefect Day for an Art Fair

While attendance was reported as way down for the air show held at the Baraboo/Wisconsin Dells airport over the weekend, crowds did seem to show up for Spring Green’s annual arts and crafts fair.  On Saturday the streets of Spring Green were filled with amazing works by area artists while live music filled the air.  The only down side to the event was the rather un-scripted parking which could easily disorient first time attendees unfamiliar with the layout of the town or the event. All in all however, the show had a wonderfully festive summer spirit and was certainty a great way to spend a hot summer Saturday. Read the rest of this entry »

Rural Wisconsin

wetwinterfarm-framedFeatured Work: Wet Winter

People around the world live the image of an old red barn covered in snow. Living here in central Wisconsin red barns are pretty much everywhere.  It probably won’t always be that way.  The truth is that they are disappearing quickly.  How many partially collapsed barns can you think of right around our area?  I can think of 4 or 5 without much effort.  The image above entitled “Wet Winter” captures a barn located out between Devil’s Head Ski Resort and Merrimac just after a wet late winter storm.  After taking the photograph I worked with it digitally to soften the edges in a way that enhanced the wet snow feel.  Up close it almost looks like a watercolor painting.  I’ve spent years behind the camera.  It’s only now that I’m finally starting to make some of this work available to the public.

At Skillet Creek I’ve opened a new Gallery Store where you can find high quality prints representing some of the most beautiful sights in our area including Devil’s Lake, Pewit’s nest and more. In addition you’ll find works from around the world.  This week however, we’re staying close to home and featuring Rural Wisconsin.  I think I may have snuck a rural Kentucky shot in there as well.  Enjoy!
