Artist Spotlight on Kyle Martin
Kyle Martin is a painter from Reedsburg, Wisconsin. He approaches his work by observing and painting the effect of light falling on the landscape. His art is created outdoors, painted en plein air, taking direct inspiration from the subject. By using color to show atmosphere he will often return to the same location to capture different moods of the same scene. His luminous paintings are created with active brushwork and broken color. Kyle’s work is displayed at the Cornerstone Gallery here in Baraboo. He also has a blog where you can see a wide variety of his paintings as well as follow along “behind the scenes”.

Booked on Facebook

If you get booked by the Reedsburg, Wisconsin, police department you can expect to get your face on Facebook and the local police department is not nearly as concerned about privacy settings as you may wish!
These days most folks know you don’t need to wait for tomorrow’s newspaper to find out what’s happening in your community today. You simply need to go online. In fact its getting easier than ever to bypass news organizations all together and go directly to the source. As local police departments realize this, they are learning to take advantage of social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter not just to reach out to communities, but to send a message to would-be law breakers as well. The Reedsburg department is leading the way in our area. While some other local police departments are now on Facebook, the Reedsburg Police Department is the first we’ve seen posting arrest information including photos. Considering how universal Facebook has become in the last year or so, the risk of having your “face” on Facebook could just serve as a brand new high-tech deterrent. What do you think?

Hit The 400

The 22 mile 400 Trail between Reedsburg and Elroy never actually closes, however most cyclists & hikers do tend to stay away when it’s covered in snow. Well, it’s time to load up the bikes, as the 400 trail is once again ready to ride. The best part, is that this time of year they wildlife is out in force taking in the new spring weather just like the rest of us.
On Sunday we were able to watch Sandhill Cranes, a hawk, two Turkey Vultures & a river otter all frolicking around one small lake from our vantage point along the trail. In fact, as you can see (below) we had to wait a bit while a pair of cranes crossed in front of us. Fantastic.

We were prepared for the trails to be in bad conditions having just been under heavy snow not so long ago, however we found them to be in good shape for the most part. There were some slightly muddy areas and the generally damp track did put a little drag under your wheels, but really, nothing to complain about.
Trail passes are $4 daily or $20 per year and will not be available at any of the outlets along the trail until May. We were directed by one local outlet to simply, “enjoy” until then. We did.
